Roy Segal’s aptly-titled e-collection of five Holmes stories is a Victorian homage to the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Its commitment to plot-driven narrative and fast-paced mystery certainly places it in the camp of stories many canon traditionalists favor. Segal’s command of logic and weaving together of clues is surprisingly devious in several places.
I hope to see more of Segal’s writing in future, perhaps with the addition of a more detailed Holmesian world and a much stricter editorial pen. This first collection shows his ability to craft pastiche that will be familiar those who enjoy consuming stories that take Doyle’s style as a strict guide. For the pleasing 99 cent price tag, others may want to give them a go as well.
