#SherlockLives & Is Back On January 1st

Yesterday, the Powers That Be behind Sherlock announced that Londoners should keep their eyes peeled for a special announcement around a few filming locations. This led to fans from as early as 6:20 in the morning staking out on North Gower Street (where Sherlock’s Baker Street is), on the actual Baker Street, and at St. Bart’s Hospital where the consulting detective made his sacrificial fall. The two hours that followed were a master PR plan. Twitter and tumblr exploded as fans from all over the world tried to figure out just what was expected… but the answer was obvious: a hearse. The Empty Hearse is the first episode of Sherlock Series 3, and so it only seemed logical that the BBC would use one to advertise the illusive air date for the UK. So that’s how thousands online became obsessed with finding a rogue hearse in London rush hour traffic, using traffic cams and the brave fans on the ground to try and find it and track it. It was around 8:52AM that the first sighting was spotted, a driveby on Baker Street heading towards St Barts. Rumors of the hearse having 01 01 14 in the windows in flowers began to spread… but there were no photos. Was it real? Was January 1st THE air date after two years of waiting? The BBC One twitter began (not so) subtlety favorited the various tweets that had that air date in it… and just a few minutes later the hearse arrived at St. Barts and all was revealed.
Sherlock Series 3 returns on BBC One on January 1st, 2014, exactly two years after A Scandal In Belgravia aired. The second episode, The Sign Of Three, will air THAT Sunday on January 5th and the final episode, His Last Vow, of the series will air on Sunday, January 12th.
