Who is the best Sherlock Holmes? This Friday at The Museum of London.
This friday, the 23 of January, join BSB Sora at The Museum of London as she debates with leading Sherlockians Jean Upton, Nick Utechin, Matthew Elliot, and David Stuart Davies about who is the best portrayal of Holmes. She’ll be defending Jeremy Brett from the Granada television series and stage play. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in on the debate in a fun way!

Rathbone, Wontner,Cushing, Brett,Wilmer. Do we really have to decide, can’t we just enjoy what these gentlemen each brought to the role. As for Watson it’s James Mason and Edward Hardwicke, with an honourable mention to David Burke.
thinking Rathbone was the Best, for me, this was the first actor to play Holmes in the programs we were able to view on TV, black and white back then and think this added to the mystique of the character, first impression and a lasting one for me.
Best? — It’s possibly generational. For many of us, as the previous post said, it was Rathbone on TV in the 1950s who made a lasting impression. Brett in the 1980s, and Cumberbatch in the 21st century each impressed that generation. My favorite is Peter Cushing. However, The Hound from 1959, a short exposure in the 60s TV series (which I understand was churned out under abysmal conditions), and one senior citizen Holmes movie. I wish Cushing had been able to portray Holmes at length, as did Jeremy Brett. Then he may have emerged as everyone’s favorite.
At the January Meeting of the SOBs we discussed who were our favorite Holmes & Watson. There was no consensus on either. We did have one member who thought as John Gehan does. Each actor brings something different to the role so we should appreciate each new addition to the list of actors. That being said, for movies I still compare Rathbone and Law to see if a performance is good. For television, I would pick Cumberbatch and Freeman.
